An Antique Qashqai Flat-Weave Carpet
An antique Qashqai flat-weave carpet from Southwest Persia, late 19th to early 20th century. Hand-knotted wool on wool foundation, approximately 106.5" x 64". Three interlocking hexagonal medallions run the length of the field, subdivided into geometric compartments filled with tribal motifs including stylized cypress trees, abstracted animal forms, and characteristic hooked latch patterns.
The palette is anchored by madder-dyed rose and terracotta reds set against deep indigo reserves, accented with ivory, gold, and soft blue-green. Natural abrash throughout gives the surface a watercolor depth that no machine-made rug can replicate. The Qashqai are a Turkic-speaking nomadic confederation from Iran's Fars Province whose weaving tradition peaked during this period, now considered the golden age of Persian tribal textile production. Good antique condition with mellowed palette and minor historic repair to center field.
